At the 14th International Conference on Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics, held in Ireland, 22-24 July 2019, Zou Shuai, a student of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering in a Doctoral Degree program, received the Outstanding Paper Award.

The awarded paper clarified the three-dimensional flow feature including the reattachment characteristics of backward-facing step flow using two-dimensional PIV. The flow structures along the streamwise, spanwise, wall normal directions were measured respectively. For the heat transfer experiment, distributions of the local heat transfer coefficient on the bottom wall downstream of the step were measured by making use of a thermo-sensitive liquid crystal sheet, which is a modern indirect measurement to obtain the local temperature distribution of the bottom wall.
