Graduate School of Science and Engineering Applied Chemistry

Course Outline

Master's Program

Aims of Academic Activities

To develop talented individuals who will play central roles in science and technology related to the creative development of functional materials, the master’s program (systemically) provides a comprehensive educational program that includes various subjects covering from the fundamentals of chemistry to cutting-edge advanced fields. The program also provides research opportunities to conduct creative study on topics related to chemistry and chemical engineering that are of great importance now and for years to come.

The process of pursuing these educational and research programs should develop talented individuals who are full of originality and have problem-solving abilities. Furthermore, the whole program serves to develop talented individuals who, not just acquiring deep scholarly knowledge and advanced expertise in chemistry and chemical engineering, have sound consciences that enable them to make judgments from a broad perspective of “chemistry and chemical engineering that can contribute to society,” in line with the spirit behind the educational philosophy of Doshisha University—liberalism, Christianity, and internationalism.

Specific Objectives for Development of Talented Individuals

This program aims to develop talented individuals who can display the following abilities:

  1. The ability to solve problems related to chemistry and chemical engineering, presentation skills, and the international perspective with common sense to understand different cultures of other countries as well as one’s own;
  2. Specialized research capabilities that can respond flexibly to issues to be solved for which our rapidly-changing modern and international societies seek in the fields of chemistry and chemical engineering;
  3. The ability to give full play to the above-mentioned capabilities even at research-and-development tasks undertaken in groups, such as when working on projects, and the ability to adapt with a sense of cooperation to problem-solving situations.

Doctoral Program

Aims of Academic Activities

The doctoral program provides the educational and research programs based on the belief that “chemistry and chemical engineering should shape an academic and technological foundation that is necessary and to be shared by mankind in order to sustain the social forms based on modern civilization in the future.” This belief, as in the master’s program, concurs to be pursued with the Doshisha spirit, i.e., liberalism, Christianity, and internationalism. In particular, an advanced level of research is to be conducted on themes related to chemistry and chemical engineering that play a key part in the fields now and in the future; the program develops leading researchers and engineers with strong will power and action who can make unerring judgments from a wide perspective about the issues in which chemistry and chemical engineering should play a role in the future and the directions that these fields should advance in. The program also develops future educators with sufficient ability to contribute to the development of such talented individuals.

Specific Objectives for Development of Talented Individuals

This program aims to develop talented individuals who can demonstrate the following abilities:

  1. The ability to make judgments from a wide perspective concerning the role that chemistry and chemical engineering play in serving society, to establish research tasks based on those judgments, and to display leadership in order to solve those tasks;
  2. The ability to acquire the international perspective with common sense to understand diverse cultures, as well as specialized knowledge, and the communication skills to be able to convey research outcomes;
  3. The ability to contribute to the development of current, international society through the advances in science and technology, and the ability, as an educator with advanced specialized knowledge, to develop the next generation of promising talent.
