Research Contents

Resource recovery from organic wastes

Production of useful organic compounds from organic wastes (e.g. sewage sludge, garbage, animal excreta, etc.) and its optimization are investigated in consideration of microbial consortia. In this study, we cultivate several microorganisms using organic wastes as their substrates. Their activities and metabolites are monitored with biochemical and molecular biological techniques. Extraction and purification of target materials are also included.

Wastewater treatment and reuse

Wastewater treatment (e.g. sewage treatment water) and energy/material recovery (e.g. incubation of microalgae) are combined and optimized based on water reuse purposes and material needs. Our current object is agricultural wastewater and a simple system of recycling water and recovering nutrients in large scale greenhouses is investigated using designed polymer coagulants.

Regional design for revitalization of depopulated areas

Regional sustainable development strategies utilizing local resources (e.g. sewage sludge as manure, local wood biomass as thermal resources, etc.) are developed. Based on their economic effects and emerging challenges, further plans are discussed with stakeholders (researchers, public officers, local residents). In the process, regional Input-Output tables are compiled using several statistic data including national census.
