Research Topics

Our researches focus on the questions of how animal and human perceive sensory information, especially sounds, and how the neural basis of the sensory mechanisms relate to behavior of animals. We investigate auditory behavior and its underlying neural mechanisms using gerbil, bat, monkey and human with neurophysiological and psychophysiological approaches. These neuroethological studies lead on new medical and welfare technologies for speech learning, effective rehabilitation training and restoration of auditory sense. In addition, through experimentally and theoretically understanding the mechanisms of spatial sensing of bats’ biosonar, we aim to create bio-inspired new engineering technologies related to sensing and navigation system. Sophisticated functions and algorisms of sensory-motor control of living creatures potentially deliver on future innovative technologies both for the fields of medicine and engineering.
